Ascent Trip Report

Took advantage of a sunny January afternoon with temperatures in the 40's to hike the Quinnipiac Trail in Sleeping Giant State Park. My daughter Madeline (12 y.o.) and I walked to the beginning of the trail on Whitney Avenue, and after following the bank of a small river, scaled the Class 2 terrain to the top of the Giant's head. We proceeded onward and downward, over some icy patches, and then up to the stone tower at the true summit located on the Giants's hip. There was ample mud in spots. Just prior to reaching the tower, I happened to slip on a patch of the dark 'ooze' and fell on all fours, with the heel of my left hand landing on a palm-sized rock (ouch!).

The sun was dipping low and the temperature was on the decline as we left the tower behind and returned to the main parking lot via the wide and easy Tower Trail.

I underestimated the number of people who would be out on a day like today, and was a bit surprised to find the main parking lot full at 1 PM.
