Ascent Trip Report

Ok I could not see doing this as a drive up although the road was dry and clear to the summit. I wanted this to be a true mountaineering endeavor and elected to take the most aggressive and dangerous route I could find to the summit. I had my wife park the car at the gate 0.4 miles away but hiked down to the low spot in the access road at elevation 3980. By selecting this unconventional trailhead before the gate, I was able to turn the approach hike into a whopping 0.5 mile each way with over 50 feet of total gain!

Yes, by doing so I truly "earned" this summit. Ha! Then off to OK to do the Black Mesa and real hike. On the positive side, the views were far and surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected and the dog loved running between me and Karen. I think his third State HP was just as exciting to him as any other hike. Karen hit #22 and that was SHP #39 for me.
