Ascent Trip Report

2nd day in Zion - got up around 6 am to be at the visitors center shortly after 7am (when the shuttles start running). This was my 2nd time doing Angel's landing and Christina's first - she was a bit nervous of the exposure.

We got to the trailhead around 7:40 and kept pace with a quick group off the bus as we followed the Virgin River. Hitting the first set of switchbacks, the group fell back and we were able to press on. We hit refrigerator canyon at ~20:00 minutes after we started. Walter's wiggles weren't bad and we made it to the chains in 36 minutes.

The Chains were not too crowded - we stopped a few times to let quicker hikers pass so that we didn't feel them breathing down our necks. A few hikers were making there way back down as we neared the end - which often necessitates stopping to let them pass. I used the chains once on the ascent as I didn't want to keep the people behind me waiting.

Nice views of Zion canyon from the top. We snapped a few photos - and I pointed out Observation Point where we had been the day before to Christina. Then we made the trek down.

The chains had gotten much more crowded and we had to stop several times for minutes to let people pass going up. This is just standard fair on a narrow - heavily trafficked hike like this. We paused at the end of the chains for a snack and then ran into more clogs in Walter's Wiggles. By this point there were a steady unending stream of asian tourists heading to the summit - we were thankful to have gotten an early start.

We had lunch on the bank of the Virgin River and then headed off to our next hike - Hidden Canyon.

Angel's landing is an easily doable hike by experienced hikers and sramblers in good weather. The danger comes when the chains become crowded with people who have not spent significant time outdoors. Their unpredictability, lack of experience dealing with exposure, and shear numbers make this hike scary at the wrong time.
