Ascent Trip ReportDrove Round Mountain Road out to the runoff for Barokee campground. The road is dirt (unsealed) but should be driveable for nearly all types of 2wd vehicles. About 100 feet past the campground turnoff is a small parking area on the right. A locked gate is just ahead blocking all unauthorized vehicles from further progress. However, there is a narrow opening in the fenceline just to the right of the gate for hikers to pass through. The road is paved from this point to the summit area where another fence is encountered, this one surrounding the aeronautic radar facility. Negative signage on the fence suggests no admittance for hikers. That, and the fact barbed wire tops the fenceline. One can circle the fenced area to the north side and get within 30 feet of the geodetic monument placed on the high point inside the fence. Standing here on the highpoint outside the fence, one is about 6-8 feet below the base of the monument. For those peakbaggers that insist on a closer inspection of the monument, I noted a hole dug under the fence perimeter in two places by animals...just big enough for a human to squeeze under.
Saw many eastern grey kangaroos on the hike, and the occasional wallaby.
