Ascent Trip Report

I was able to easily drive the nice bladed dirt forest road to the saddle between the Ears. 6.0 miles from pavement. Parking for 2-3 cars.

I hiked the higher East Bears Ear first, and went straight up from the saddle. This is not the recommended route.... I had to push through scrub oak, and over the west side lobe of it.

There is a BM on top. No register I recall.

It took almost an hour to get to the top.

I returned down the north facing gulley, and this was better, and it took me to an old 4WD trace, which I walked out to the forest road then back up to the saddle.

I then ascended straight up to the West Ear. Again, very steep and a faint path but not a good idea. Got to the western end, found a cairn. I descended northward again using the gentler gulley, and it took me to yet another old 4wd trace, then back to the saddle.

A total of 2:30 car to car to car. Great views, cool but good weather. It had been 12d in Hanksville that morning, was 30d when I arrived and 45d when I left.

The East Bears Ear is possibly the new HP of the new Nat Mon, if Trump/Zinke have their way. Cathedral Butte would be the HP of the other unit in their plan. We shall see.....
