Ascent Trip ReportMade a second attempt at Middle Peak today and what a difference from my first attempt in late September! I'd read the last couple reports that some clipping had been done and was excited to see what had changed. It was truly a night and day difference. I actually ran into some Sierra Club members and one guy in particular who said he spent four hours clipping the trail a few weeks ago - thank you!!
Some additional clipping was done today and I can now say that the use trail to the top from Middle Peak Loop Fire Road is actually a use trail again! I would still recommend long sleeves and long pants, but it's a moderate bushwhack now.
I took the fire road all the way up this time from the Trout Pond trailhead. The fire road wasn't as interesting or rewarding as our first approach, so I would highly recommend doing the loop we did the first time, which affords fantastic views in all directions along the way. That first route, we took Milk Ranch Rd to Black Oak Trail to the fire road and use trail, then on the way back took the Sugar Pine Trail back to the trail that runs parallel to the highway, which takes you back to the Trout Pond trailhead in 0.7 mi.
Really great to see that Middle Peak is accessible again! The register generally has several entries each month, but there were no entries at all from June 2017 until December 2017 due to the massive growth. Great to see the entries starting to pop up again!
