Ascent Trip ReportGoing straight up for the east ridge was a very bad choice. Even the level approach was a constant route-finding hassle with all the cacti and prickly brush. Then add in all the loose rocks when it got steep. The up-and-down traverse may have been fun without all the previous difficulty. The very steep final ascent with some scrambling was much better, since it was more about finding a way up rocks than avoiding plants.
From the top, I could see that the main wash going down had a lot of open gravel, so I went for it. I stayed out of the wash down to 2880msl. From there, I was surprised that it was open all the way back. Nearing where I needed to exit, I saw a couple javelina above the wash. I went up a ramp made by cows to look for them, and happened on a great cattle trail back to the road. I left a little cairn to mark the trail.
Topos show a road leading to that wash. It appears to be fenced about the same distance away, and also looks less used than the one to the guzzler. I recommend SUVs with good clearance, mainly for crossing the washes.
