Ascent Trip Report

Day #3 - NEHH group trip

08:00 - Meet at the end of Stratton Brook road. The road is not plowed in the winter (snowmobile trail), so we will be hiking in a long way.
08:20 - Everyone is ready to go. We hit the trail (road) headed for the horns. 8 People will do the horns and back, 4 of us will do Bigelow and Avery (full loop). The trail is somewhat broken out (~2 days prior w/ windblown snow). There is a quick break when the trail branches to the left. Then there is another quick brack at the leanto at the AT intersection. I arrive first and because I was leading, I developed a fair amount of sweat. As we waited, I became very cold and changed a layer. It took a couple of minutes to warm back up, but it was a smart decision to put a dry layer on.
12:00 - The Horns summit. There are some nice views. Blue sky and light wind. A few quick pics. We say goodbye to the 8 people returning and 4 of us push on toward Avery (not breaking trail).
13:30 - Bigelow Summit. We quickly pop up to the summit and take some nice pics. The wind is higher as it's exposed so we move along quickly toward Avery.
14:00 - Avery summit. The wind is much higher here. We grab some shelter behind the foundation for a few minutes. After a few quick pics, we run back over the summit and scramble down into the trees to get out of the COLD. I notice one of the guys has bad frostbite on his nose. We quickly warm it up and get moving.
16:42 - Back at the cars. Just before dark. This was a long (15+ miles) cold (below 0 all day) day.
