Ascent Trip ReportDrove down to Guadalupe Canyon and stayed at the Hot Springs. Next time we will go to the Guadalupe Canyon Oasis, which looks to be nicer, though still rustic. Both campgrounds have private hot pools at each campsite. Peter got sick so Jim Morehouse and I climbed the peak. The DPS peak guide is terribly off on distance--it says 5 miles rt but I came out at 14.2 miles which included some wandering (route-finding) and bounce. Gain around 4000' is correct. If you like bouldering, this climb is for you! We found a way up to the summit block that seemed different than the peak guide and what Jim had done on his first summit of this peak, but it worked well. The 2 foot step over was not too intimidating, but beware that the upper side is kind of slippery. No peak register. The descent seemed to take forever and we ended in the dark. Take a good headlamp, and time your trip with moonlight if you can. We had a half moon that did help to see the greater area. Peter aired down our tires (F-350 with camper, so we are heavy) which gave a nicer and faster ride, but it takes time to air down and up so the time came out about even.
