Ascent Trip ReportDon't underestimate the time necessary for this one. I should have heeded earlier TRs better. The trails are circuitous and the thorns/rhododendrons on the short whacks slow you down no small amount.
This was a neat hike though. Very different geology from my home northern NE.
Started at the west trailhead and headed up the Blue trail to the left/north. Lost the trail when it headed back into the woods on the pipeline swath but it worked out. Topped out on the swath and headed into the woods toward Area 6. Scraptacular going. All of these little ridges have some nice rocky tops though. After hitting that point, we whacked south and re-encountered the blue trail just NW of the pond. Took the veeeery icy blue/white trail East and did the short whack up to the Bearfort marker. Forgot about Area 5 but we were running short on light anyways. We skipped the "main" summit area and went back down the blue trail then the swath straight to the road, saving a few minutes.
Suggestions: Do this in winter. Pants and long sleeves came in handy. I'm sure it's much more peaceful than the madhouse this place seems to be in the summer. Bring some traction. And again, it takes longer than it looks on the map. We did a creeping 3.7 miles in 3 hours and only got the two points.
