Ascent Trip Report

After hiking Chinidere Mountain in Oregon put me on the Pacific Crest Trail for a mile or so, I thought it would be fun to find a peak closer to home that would put me on the Appalachian Trail for however short a time. That way I could say that I at least stood on both iconic trails in the same year. Getting to Stratton Mt. wasn't too bad. Driving down the Stratton-Arlington Rd. from the Wardsboro side, just drive past the Kelley Stand Trailhead and the big parking area for it on the right and the Stratton Mt. TH will be on the right as well. You know you're in the right spot because there's a big brown sign at the parking area that says "AT/LT Stratton Mt. 3.4". The dog and I got out of the truck and started up the trail. Maybe 3" or so of fresh snow, so I wore mircrospikes with my snowshoes strapped to the pack just in case I'd need them higher up. Saw some moose tracks, but no sign of recent human activity on the trail. The trail itself was easy to follow even with the snow cover. It's route through the trees was obvious and I got used to seeing the white paint blazes on the trees as trail markers instead of the DEC disks I'm used to. We eventually passed what looked like a woods road with cross country ski tracks on it and beyond that we were alone again. The trail keeps moving up and I wasn't feeling particularly well this day so some of it is a blur. That changed though when we made the top and the sky lightened a bit. The unmarked snow, evergreen trees and fire tower made for a beautiful and peaceful sight. Some nice views from up on the tower stairs, but the cabin windows were fogged over with ice and nothing could be seen through them. We didn't stay too long, just worked our way back down. Again, not a soul seen the entire day.
