Ascent Trip Report

The last summit of a 13-mile hike which included Mendon and Killington. It was a hot, humid day complete with a bushwhack to Mendon, and intrepid flies that buzzed in our ears for hours at a time. I made the mistake of not carrying enough water, and when presented with the opportunity to obtain and purify more, chose to fill one bottle (not 2). This was also a mistake - a big one - and it led to a situation where I ran out. The cumulative effects of heat and dehydration were such that I was concerned I wouldn't make it to my vehicle in Sherburne Pass, never mind summiting another mountain. I set out on the short climb to the summit from Pico Camp Shelter, but I was dragging, and pulled the plug after a tenth of a mile. Thus, I bagged out of climbing Pico - modest peak that it is - and continued to the car.

This hike taught me the importance of proper hydration, and I now use a CamelBak pack, and also carry Gatorade, especially on hot days.
