Ascent Trip ReportI had originally planned to combine this peak with Peak 1720 across the valley but ran out of time so came back a week later to finish.
The two peaks would make an excellent combo hike, 8-9 miles and a couple of thousand feet. Best is to climb 1801 first; it is easier and you get a good view across the valley to 1720 and can see the direct route from the valley up to the ridge.
For 1801 I parked at the same spot on the Knoxville Berryessa Road and hiked 2 miles out the flat ranch road alongside Zim ZIm Creek. There are 3 creek crossings (plus two more which you can avoid as I did on my return route by taking a shortcut past a curve in the creek). If water is high you'll likely get wet crossing. In December it was just a few hops on stepping stones.
At the two mile make I turned left up an old 4x4 track up the side of the hill. It's shown on the topo and is all there, but is quite overgrown. I clipped what I could of the denser areas, but with GPS you won't miss the trail. At the crest the track cuts right, goes up over a few false summits, then hits the peak. The views as on 1720 are remarkable, long ridges on either side, Blue Ridge to the east and Adams Ridge to the west. You can see south to Lake Berryessa and beyond and north to Saint John Mountain.
The descent was easy but I spent a fair bit of time clipping brush. From the base of the 4x4 track you can continue across Zim ZIm Creek and go up the opposite ridge, staying in the grassy areas and angling east to join the ridgetop where my other track did. Then it is a mile or so north along the ridge through scattered low brush.
The entire hike is public, mostly in the Knoxville Wildlife Area, though the summit of 1801 is on BLM land.
If you go please take register. I forgot and there isn't one there.
