Ascent Trip Report

with Mom (Frances Still) a very fun traverse in the sun from West Peak to Middle Peak and finally to Hawthorne Peak. We started up the unofficial west peak trail and easily made it up to the top of West Peak. The traverse to Middle Peak is easy walking.

The down climb off of Middle Peak was quite interesting. I lowered my mom down a full 50 meter rope length and then I down climbed horribly rotten class 4+ cliffs to the steep snow below that my mom had already climbed down once I got there. We then made a very beautiful hike up to the summit of Hawthorne Peak. This part of the ridge is very rarely if ever visited. My mom down climbed the steep snow off the summit plateau of Hawthorne Peak while I did a very sketchy glissade down the same terrain. Luckily the snow was soft and I was able to maintain control, but these are the decisions you make at 17 years old. We finished the hike by traversing over to the Sheep Creek Trail and descending that trail back to the road. I ran the road back to the car and picked up Mom at the trailhead. An awesome day of hiking!
