Ascent Trip ReportI'm not sure why I'd never heard of Sugarloaf before, but in my opinion, this is one of the best peaks near Boulder for non-hiker visitors to get a sense of the transition between the plains and high peaks. Yeah, you can easily walk from downtown Boulder to Green or Bear and get much the same view, but I think it's pretty cool being in the midst of the transition, plus the drive through Boulder canyon is definitely worth it.
My fiancee and I have been eyeing Sugarloaf for a while since its distinctive beige cone is easily visible from the eastern side of Boulder. It's an easy hike starting from the junction of Sugarloaf Mountain Road and the old Switzerland Trail rail bed, at about 8440', which gains less than 500' over a 1.5 mile round trip, which again, would be perfect for flatlanders that want to see some mountains and don't want to start a hike at Chautauqua.
