Ascent Trip ReportOur second attempt to reach the trailhead for Sombrero Peak. The first time, our high clearance vehicle got stuck in the sand and had to be towed out. The second time, we returned with a 4x4. Bring a 4x4! Take Hwy S2 close to Mile 46, exit to Indian Gorge. Drive for 2.5 miles, then take the left fork to Indian Canyon South to the end of the road. From here, head south up the boulder-filled canyon, then ascend up a sandy and rocky steep wall with two sort of false peaks until you reach the true summit. As with most desert peaks, this hike involves slugging over huge boulders and avoiding various species of cholla, agave, and other cacti. Beautiful views at the top!
