Ascent Trip Report

Katrina and I needed to hike Vulture because it's in our 60 Hikes within 60 Miles of Phoenix book. We came in off the 10 on Vulture Mine Road and found the two wheel trailhead without a problem. The trail quickly dropped into a wash and there we looked for the continuation of the trail for a minute, then found it by a fence to the right. Meanwhile, we found a head of decaying matter that turned out to be a cow. It was turning into fibers it had been out so long. The trail then headed uphill and then back down a second time. I hoped we would see a desert tortoise in the wash, but no luck. Then we passed the 4WD TH and continued up the trail everyone has to take. There were a couple switchbacks that got us up to the saddle. It felt like a mini Brown's Peak. We then headed up and to the left which is where it got fun. The route tightened up and we had to scramble up a drainage that was thankfully just bedrock. On top we did some vulture poses and took a name break. The peak does look like a Vulture when viewed from certain angles. It's also the most impressive peak visible from Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park. On the way down we had a small jam as two people came up the tight part while we let them pass. The hike back was no big deal. This is a fun, short hike.
