My plan was to head up the power line swath that crosses Oklahoma Road and then turn right at the first tower and bushwhack to the summit. I had turned onto Oklahoma from US 21 after hiking up Bryants Knob. After winding down Oklahoma to the large power line I found no sizable shoulder to pull off on so I continued another 100 yards or so to where a gated grassy road headed up in the direction of Bucks. I did a u-turn and parked on the wider shoulder just north of the posted gate.
Because of the posted sign I elected not to go up the road but instead bushwhacked thru the woods to the power line swath and continued up it till I arrived at the first southbound tower. Decent views available at the base. I then followed a dirt road to the west passing a hunting blind and then arrived at the cleared summit.
The unobstructed view of Stone Mountain was fantastic.
The state park boundary runs up close to the summit, but clearly my route was not on park land. I walked back to the car using the grassy road that goes from the summit all the way to gate at Oklahoma Road. I believe if you parked further down Oklahoma towards the tee with the Frank Parkway, you could bushwhack/ascend on park land almost to the very top of Bucks.
However you chose to get to the top, the view over towards Stone Mt should definitely be worth it.
