Ascent Trip ReportPoint of reference. Sign at top of peak calls this mountain Kami-Yama.
Beginning of trail from Ropeway station was roped off and had a wooden structure set up to block the path, but was knocked over. I hopped over the rope and made my way down the brushy path. About 150 feet there was a metal fence and locked gate that probably said the trail was closed. Presumably because it was winter and/or the trail was in severe disrepair. Maybe it is permanently closed, who knows, and I didn’t take the time to translate the Japanese due to my family waiting for me.
The trail was badly degraded with erosion and broken stairs. I briefly lost the trail while moving quickly but picked it up at the pass, the lowest elevation for my treck up. The trail up was very brushy and overgrown. Finally I made it up to the summit which had a few markers, signs, and the continuance of the trail, all the way down to the Owakudani.
After tagging the high point, I continued on toward the lower peak, which I was excited to get to as I had seen it from our last visit to the Owakudani two weeks ago.
The trail was steep and I began to smell sulfur from the hot springs. I got down to the trail intersection and began the climb up kanmuri-Ga-Dake. I was surprised to pass a small tori gate and shrine on the way up and had some peek a boo views down to the springs and parking lot. At the top there was a sign and a marker. I quickly headed back to the Ropeway and at the top, caught great views of Mount Fuji
GPS locked up on descent. Same path back, with minor deviation of following path the entire way back.
