I nabbed this and other AZ CoHPs while on a conference trip to Las Vegas. Everything in AZ is geologically interesting. I look forward to doing more peaks in AZ!
Left the TH at 1530 which was the earliest I could start with my flight into LV and the long drive out; I knew I would be descending in the dark. A large school group was coming down from the trail but not from the summit. There were 3 or 4 other groups descending higher up and I passed one pair of backpackers with enormous packs beginning their training for Denali.
The trail is well-established, well-marked, and (currently) clear of all blowdown. Once on the ridge the wind increased and got progressively stronger until it was sustained 40+mph winds (difficult to walk, couldn't breath without cupping my hands over my mouth or turning away from wind) and gusts of 50+mph (blow you off balance mid-step) rushing up the mountain from the valley floor. It was incredible wind, the strongest I've been in yet! I got to enjoy the summit at the moment of sunset at 1815 and witnessed the triangle shadow to the horizon.
I was booking it since I had a short timeframe to hit other peaks as well so skipped Doyle, Fremont, Agassiz. I descended halfway to the saddle in the twilight where I then discovered corroded batteries and no extras...! With no moon I used the little remaining battery in my phone to descend by flashlight. I rushed as fast as I could on the trail knowing I didn't have much battery life. It finally died just as I reached the edge of the parking lot. Lesson learned!
1/1 ACCESS - TH at ski area
1/2 REMOTENESS (Popularity, Sight/Sound) - I can imagine this peak being VERY busy on weekends
1/1 CONDITION - wide well-established trail all the way to the summit
2/3 VARIETY (Flora and Fauna, Geological, Terrain) - only two distinct environments (woods and rocky ridge)
2/3 VIEWS - views as far as the eye can see, though underwhelming since it's the only thing to be seen in the area!
(does not include difficulty since hikers may prefer opposite extremes)
