Ascent Trip ReportWalk starts with a sharp right turn up aptly named Martyr Road. From here, a sign directs you onto a proper hiking track, which crosses a creek before eventually intersecting another track (the O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail). After this, the track virtually goes straight up the side of the mountain, at perhaps a 1 in 3 grade, with the track being extremely muddy (at least foot deep) due to the rain conditions. After enough slogging through the steep muddy trail, we reached a road and had the option to follow the road or the fire trail to the summit. We decided to follow the bitumen road to the summit, but constantly had to be on the lookout for traffic. At the summit, we got some light snow and got a decent view over the nearby ranges from the fire tower.
On the way down, we followed the fire track which was nicer than walking along the road, with the grade being only slight and the trail not being too muddy. We then descended down the hiking track after reaching the road again, sliding our way down through the mud. All in all, the hike is quite steep and likely to be very muddy if there has been recent rain (expect a few slips in that case), but a sense of accomplishment was definitely felt at the end of the day. Most of the trail is in dense bushland, but the top is clear. |
