Ascent Trip Report

From the Powerline road just west of its junction with Camp Rock road Kelley and I turned north onto BLM Road 6657 (which is not shown on the topo map) and drove about one mile, then turned right (north) onto BLM road 6659 and followed it about another mile, then we parked next to the Gazzler shown on the topo map and spent the night. The first BLM road requires a high clearance vehicle and the second BLM road requires a high clearance 4x; also, the road continues another 1/2 miles up the canyon from where we parked, but the last 1/4 mile or so of the road requires a more capable vehicle (and maybe driver) then my 4x Tacoma. The next morning, I climbed the peak via the standard DPS Route while Kelley stayed in camp because she did not want to climb the peak for a second time. The DPS guide rates this route as class 1, but I think that it's more like class 2; in addition, the round trip time was about 3 hours.
