Ascent Trip Report

Led DPS trip to this peak on WTC graduation day. The ceremony was held later at Joshua Tree Lake. DPS guide says dirt road to Route A is good, but it has deep sand not passable by passenger car. Instead, we camped 0.2mi east of the pass, driving in on an excellent dirt road to a large flat area by the communications towers. It's easy to find at night because the red light on the tower is flashing in the dark. This location added only about a half mile round trip to the hike.

The route (A) starts by going up a drainage, which is in the shade in the morning and also most of the day. It was nice to have some shade at the end of the day when descending. There is some scrambling along the way, but with careful route-finding it is possible to stay class 2. There are 3 keyholes near the summit. The summit block is an easy class 2+ with great handholds. This hike would have been nicer on a cooler day, but we survived with temps in the 80s by carrying 4L each.
