Ascent Trip Report

Drove up from Las Cruces so instead of proceeding on to TorC to access the mountain using the standard route I exited off I-25 at exit 32 onto CR-E71, CR-E70 then A013. At Spaceport America the dirt road turns to pavement. This is also where a signed CR-A12 heads west to Timber Mtn which is visible in the distance. Proceeded through the gate over the railroad tracks to another gate. Do not take this route if the road is wet. Continued straight on what Google Maps calls, Aleman Shortcut, and what my vehicle navigation system called Apache Gap Road for about 6.5 miles where it curves to the right for 1.3 miles to a signed Slater Road, turn left; then 1.6 miles later turned right right on a signed Lyons Road. Caballo Peak Road which is located in Putnam wash follows about 7/10 mile later. This turn is not easy to see since the road is in a wash. My vehicle navigation system showed it as Caballo Peak Road. This road is a single lane and in poor to fair condition. The switchbacks are worse. I rarely have to use 4WD drive but the loose rock/steep sections necessitated the need to switch it on. Drove the road to the comm site with Timber Mtn behind it to the Southwest. Due to approaching darkness made a quick trip. Went out the standard route, per Richard Carey TR, using CR-8 which my navigation system showed as Windmill Road to NM-51.
