Ascent Trip ReportDrove from Jackson Meadow Road to Meadow Lake TH at Summit City. The Fordyce jeep trail descends from this point but there is a right turn from it near the start that goes uphill initially to Prospect Mine (not identified). The road goes for 2 miles, then ends 2 travel miles from the peak. On my way out I went up to the top of the granite outcroppings above Phoenix Lake, then dropped down to the lake. There was a use trail near the lake. I went up to the area where the mine trail was and followed that trail to the summit, around the steep rock wall. The trail was a bit sketchy toward the end.
For the descent I followed the mine trail much further but lost it shortly after the low point, which was lower than Phoenix Lake. I chose my own route and sometimes passed cairns for the trail but kept losing it. I used a GPS to get back to the road.

The drive to Meadow Lake has two roads, the first not too bad, the second very rough for 3 miles. Near the lake the road is much less bumpy. There are campsites at the lake that look very nice, well separated from neighbors. In October lots of sites are free. The drive took me about 1.5 hours from Truckee. |
