Ascent Trip ReportNeeded to get back out in the woods and clear my head from a rough work weekend, so Black Mountain it was. Instead of just heading up the mountain and back though, I decided to make a loop out of it and head down the backside of the mountain towards Lake George and take the trail past Black Mountain Pond and Lapland Pond back around the base of the mountain. The morning was mid-40's and overcast. I could see my breath and one other vehicle at the trailhead as I got out of the truck. The trail itself was dry and still in great shape. Views from the top were spectacular with foliage in full show. The trail down the back definitely opened the views that I hadn't seen from Black Mountain before and I was immediately glad for my choice. The way the grass and bushes pushed in on the trail, it does seems as though this trail isn't used quite as often as the direct up and down of the main trail. If that;s true though, it's a shame because it's a fun way to compliment the hike and give you some more bang for your buck. There is a small amount of elevation gain between the west side of the mountain heading towards the lake and the trailhead on Pike Brook Rd., but nothing to worry about if you've already done the mountain itself. |
