Ascent Trip ReportTried another route and this may be my favorite. It is long but gives a view of the entire mountain and all of its many ravines. I even found a few pine trees on this route. First I parked near the intersection of Alameda and Alameda at the intersection where it makes a 90 degree turn by Bear Creek and Jewell roads. There is a tiny parking area and curb cut there can take about 2 cars perhaps 3. You can hike up a relatively level road (Green Mountain Trail)until it meets with an intersection with other trails including Rooney Valley Trail. I took Rooney Valley Trail to the left and the trail meanders up and down many hills and ravines and shows great views of Mount Morrison, Red Rocks Theatre, etc.
I found a full rack buck mule deer that stealthily moved into a the shrubs and bedded down. Point 6271 is near where the buck bedded down. There are some nice views from this USGS point but they area closing the trail to this point. I enjoyed the views of this route better than any other. After reaching the summit of the peak, I completed the loop by hiking down the radio tower maintenance road back to the John Hayden Trail and looped back to the original parking area.
I am going to summarize the various routes and their distances and gains that I have tried now:
Approaches from the West
Route 1a: Park at Rooney Road TH b/n Rooney Rd. and SR 470; TH EL 6,050; Simply follow the wide maintenance road to the top; Dist. 1.6 miles E.W.; 3.2 RT; Net gain = 805'; Add. gain = 0' E.W; Tot. gain = 805'
Route 1b: Park at Rooney Road TH b/n Rooney Rd. and St 470 and take the overpass to the park; but instead of following the maintenance road slide right down Box of Rocks bike trail to Green Mtn trail to intersection with and take Rooney Vally Trail to summit; then loop back along the three bumps at the summit and down the maintenance road and finish off with the Box-o-rocks bike trail; takes you over a few interesting rock formations; Dist 2.4 mile then 1.6 down for 4.0 RT; Net gain - 805; Add.gain 140; total gain 945
Approaches from the Southeast
Route 2a: Park at Green Mtn Hayden TH off W. Alameda Pky (this is one of the main paved parking areas and it has a por-o-let there too; TH EL 6,120; Take the steep switchback trail (Green Mountain Trail) to the right (not the Hayden Trail) and gain the ridge to the east by following the Summit Loop Trailand follow trail to the radio tower where you meet up with the same maintenance road used in Route 1 but on the east side of the park. The Maintenance Road takes you to the HP.; Dist. 1.8 miles E.W.; 3.6 RT; Net gain = 735'; Add. gain = 50' E.W; Total gain = 835'
Route 2b: Park at Green Mtn Hayden TH off W. Alameda Pky (main paved parking area); TH EL 6,120; Do not take the steep switchback trail to the east (Green Mtn Trail), instead of staying on the ridge with the Summit Loop Trail, go left, and continue on the Green Mtn. Tr. to the Hayden Trail until it meets up with the maintenance road but this skips you having to hike past the radio tower; Dist. 2.3 miles E.W.; 4.6 RT; Net gain = 735'; Add. gain = 60' E.W; Total gain = 855'
Route 2b (alt-1). Park at the main paved parking discussed in Route 2b TH EL 6,120; but instead of taking the main switch back trail to the right that gains the ridge immediately, take the lower connecting trail that leads you to the dirt parking area in route 2c. This adds 0.3 miles each way and some additional gain in hilly terrain. The add gain increases to 135' each way from the 60' in route 2c. Dist. 2.6 miles E.W.; 5.2 RT; Net gain = 735'; Add. gain = 135' E.W; Total gain = 1,005'
Route 2c: Park at the small dirt lot across from W. Utah Av. There is a port-o-let there too. This is the TH for the Hayden Trail. TH EL. 6100; Take the Hayden Tr. till it intersects with the maintenance road and find HP; Dist. 2.1 miles E.W.; 4.2 RT; Net gain = 755'; Add. gain = 60' E.W; Total gain = 875'
Approaches from the Northeast
Route 3a: Park at W. Expedition Pl.TH EL 6,200; Take N. Access trail (maintenance road to water tower) as an alternate there is a use trail that takes the ridge just above the maintenance road but the two paths join again just before the water tank; Dist. 1.3 miles E.W.; 2.6 RT; Net gain = 655'; Add. gain = 30' E.W; Total gain = 705'
Route 3b: Park at W. Expedition Pl.TH EL 6,200; Drop in due south of the paved road and take steep use path down in the ravine and use the ridge south of the N. Access Tr. looping back on the Summit Loop Tr.; Dist. 1.8 miles E.W.; 3.6 RT; Net gain = 655'; Add. gain = 10' E.W; Total gain = 675'
Route 3c: Park at W. Expedition Dr. adj. to Mountainside Park. This is not Place but Drive. There is small use path connecting the two trails;TH EL 6,080; Dist. 1.45 miles E.W.; 2.9 RT; Net gain = 775'; Add. gain = 30' E.W; Total gain = 835'
Route 3d: Park at W. Expedition Dr. at NW terminus. Note this is not near route 3a or 3b but further to the Northwest where Drive ends; TH EL 6,260; Dist. 1.7 miles E.W.; 3.4 RT; Net gain = 595'; Add. gain = 40' E.W; Total gain = 675'
Route 3e: Park at W. Center Dr. at NW terminus the road that parallels West Expedition Drive but the TH is lower; TH EL 6,170; Dist. 1.7 miles E.W.; 3.4 RT; Net gain = 685'; Add. gain = 40' E.W; Total gain = 765'
Route 4: Park at W. Cedar Drive terminus where it forms a partial cul-de-sac; This is an unmarked un-named spur trail that takes you to the North Access trail but meanders around a creek and has the lowest starting TH. Road EL 5,936 near TH. Dist. 2.7 miles E.W.; 5.4 RT; Net gain = 918'; Add. gain = 90' E.W; Total gain = 1098'
Approaches from the South:
Route 5a: Park at tiny dirt parking lot where W. Alameda Parkway intersects with itself at a 90 degree with a light; TH EL 6,040. Hike up use trail to the maintenance road until you intersect with the Rooney Valley Trail. Take the RVT to the summit; Dist. 2.8 miles E.W.; 5.6 RT; Net gain = 815'; Add. gain = 155' E.W; Total gain = 1,125' NOTE recently the County closed the dirt parking area here. You can still hike up it but you cannot park here
Route 5b: Park at tiny dirt parking lot where W. Alameda Parkway intersects with itself at a 90 degree with a light; TH EL 6,040. Hike up use trail to the maintenance road until you intersect with the Rooney Valley Trail. Take the RVT to the summit but make a large loop and do not head back the same way. Instead, take maintenance road east to Hayden trail to Green Mtn Trail and head back to dirt lot; Dist. 2.8/2.5 miles; 5.3 RT; Net gain = 815'; Add. gain = 155/130' E.W; Total gain = 1,100' (NOTE update 3-4-2018: dirt parking is gone; TH is still open but you have to walk to this TH (parking closed).
Route 5c: Park at Forsberg Park on the south side of W. Alameda Parkway. Th EL 6,080. Nice paved parking area with bathrooms. Cross Alameda where the new construction is. The trailhead trifurcates. Straight ahead is a maintenance road to a buried water tank facility not approved tails that way (although a steep use trail exists). Either trail to the right or left will take you to the mid level bike trail. Heading left (west will get you more directly to the Rooney Valley Trail and up to the peak but there is a lot of lower elevation meandering. The trail to the right is a more direct elevation gain up the midlevel bike trail head west and also eventually intersect the Rooney Valley trail or loop and use both. Dist. 2.5/2.6 or 5.1 miles RT; Net gain = 775'; Add. gain = 100/205' E.W; Total gain = 1,080'
Route 5c-alt. For an alternate that takes a 2.5 to 3 hours, you can hike all the way down through the subdivision below the park along very well developed bike trails and sidewalks and then start up the mountain. This adds 1 mile each way and about 240 feet of gain. The very bottom is at 5,840 near West LaSalle and Orion. 7.1 miles RT and Total gain 1,320 feet.
