Ascent Trip ReportBrutal trip to this classic peak. First day 8 hours with full pack, up 1200', down 3000' with no trail. Second day 15hr 20 min to summit and back. Had trouble route finding with lots of ducks that shouldn't have been there. Three of our group of five made it. Came back and had a ringtail steal my first aid kit as I was rearranging things in my pack. This happened about 11pm. Never found it. Third day 11 hours reversing the first day, ending in the dark. Exhausted. I didn't eat or drink enough and hit the wall on summit day but forced myself to keep going. Hardest 3 days of my life.
Ranger station open 7am-8pm but they let us in later. It seems to be a congregating area for those who live there.
They no longer allow camping at the trailhead (although someone was on our way out). There are decent campgrounds (isolated sites) just past the entrance station that are "free" once you pay your fee to enter. It worked out to about $4 per person per night, or $15 for the 4 nights we were there including the night before and night after.
The weather was about perfect if a bit too warm for me. The campsites are at about 8000' and are considerably cooler than Campo Noche at about 6000'. The climb starts in the shade of a ridge but then is sun-exposed. We found running clear water in a couple of places, which we took advantage of on the way down. 4 liters was not enough since it took us so long.
