Ascent Trip Report

Started at the lower trailhead for the East Slopes standard route at 730am. Only 2 other cars in the lot. The part of the trail that is shared. Y the Colorado trail went quickly as did the part up through tree line. But then it turned steep and felt slow and hard. I think I was having a high gravity day where for most of the hike I felt off. I encountered a woman descending at 930 which I thought was odd, I later learned from a gentlemen walking behind me that she thought there was too much ice for her to continue. I noted that she was wearing some type of running shoe. As was the man walking behind me. We discussed the ice and he was only going to go as high as he was comfortable with. He would turn around shortly thereafter due to snow. It was here, about 30 min below the saddle that I encountered a couple from Illinois, the woman was nauseous from the altitude as this was her first 14er having only arrived in the area Andy or two ago. They had camped overnight at ~11000 ft. She was also complaining of blisters which I gave her moleskin for. Then I continued up to the saddle. At some point I lost the trail and ended up sidehilling for a long way before gaining the ridge where I found the going very easy to he false summit and over to the true summit. I took a break and returned to the saddle on the now very obvious trail. I sat for a bit then begaan the climb of south Massive. This included some trail blazing through a bit of deep snow then up the ridge which was mostly clear of snow. Returned to the saddle and slow hike back to the van. I took a nice break in a meadow before tree line and laid down to a great view of both Elbert and massive. I would see two others today. Long day. Though there was snow to deal with, at no time did I feel the need to wear my micro spikes. Returned at 5pm.
