Ascent Trip ReportOn several lists to do in the Las Vegas area. Trip well written up. Always described as stenuous and loose material. The access road is 4x4/HCV Jeep Trail that is indeed very steep in places (exceeds 30 degrees) and is created in very eroded sedimentary layers of primaily limestone. It is not as dangerous as i the write ups i read, but we each took one full body spill to the ground.
Dunaway did the trip with a bad knee that is awaiting surgury (torn ACL) but it did not prevent him from summitting. The reports say give it 4-5 hours to summit the last peak. I was on top of the outter most peak (Airbeacon station) in 1 hour and 15. Even with the side hikes (see sequence 2) we were out only 3 hours.
Air show was going on the entire time next to use from the airforce elite fighter team which made it interesting being buzzed. The manmade crap all over the peaks was a distraction so i rate this lower ascent quality but i knew that going in. There is few things you can bag (or practice climb) in the area so the time to get there and back was great. Easy to find. Some debris, glass, and other dumping in the lower sections not fun to see either but that was expected from the reports i read too.
some sumps and saddles. An extra gain of 20 on way to the false summit saddle, the false summit saddle has about 320 feet of lost gain, and then there are two adjacent peaks at top with about 20 in between them so doing it all call it 360 feet of additional gain up. The bests viewing and walking is the unmarked ridge line trail that exists betweent the two major airbeacons at the top!
