Ascent Trip Report

After hiking up Bill Couch peak and enjoying nice views I hiked back to Red Mesa Loop and thought I would bushwhack the other local subpeaks. I Started with the inner two closed contours just on the other side of the Bill Couch mountain and after getting scratched horribly by scrub oaks (Gambrel) and having attempted the subpeaks twice I decided that journey was not worth entering in the database. No views, little prominence, and uncomfortable bushwhacking. I set my sights on the last large closed contour in the park.

I did not realize it until later, but the subpeak in the backside of the Red Mesa Loop is not simply another subpeak, it is actually the tallest peak in the entire park boundary. And, unlike the more popular Bill Couch Peak, and Wilds Peak, the park HP peak have over 100 feet of prominence so it makes the Slayton threshold of over 100.
Fortunately, the bushwhack off of the backside of Red Mesa Loop was far easier than the ones I tried over near Bill Couch and the peak actually has a small clearing and two rocky boulder formations to mark the summit. I can't say the views are all that good, but at least the true park HP has a true summit and I enjoy a bushwhack every now and then. The peak is only 0.1 mile off of the trail so an easy extra credit hike.
