Ascent Trip Report

I followed Bill Schulers TR. It took me 2 visits to complete the 6 candidate high point areas, all as per this one only TR.

Bill Schuler did a good job in his TR and must be congratulated. This report uses Bill's numbering system (different than that of Peakbagger), and for convenience I provide the Peakbagger numbers in brackets. One must read Bill - this TR is not a stand alone report, it only adds detail. In the case of Areas 3 & 5 I provide a completely different approach.
2 Areas on Moltke Quad (#1&2)
3 Areas on Cranberry Lake Quad (#3,4&5)
1 Area on Onaway Quad (#6)

VISIT #1 DATED 2015-08-15 .... successful visit to 4 of the 6 areas.

2 AREAS (#1(4) & #2(5)) ON MOLTKE QUAD .. successful, nothing to be add to Bill's TR since nothing has changed.

The maze of roads here is ridiculous, mostly all unsigned. We approached these 3 areas from the south (different of that of Bill's), and therefore had a heck of time knowing where we were going. We successfully visited only one of these 3 areas.
AREA #3(1) and #5(3) ... unsuccessful, didn't do my homework, Bill's directions didn't get me there. Will have to come back with my own researched routes.
AREA #4(2) .... a successful a track and bushwack, 1.5 miles, 40 minutes RT.
We parked at Bill's "36.7M Marker". I should note that the road between this spot and the prior "36.5M Marker" has a very sandy/risky section, its probable safest to park at "36.5M". Luckily we had dry weather.
I walked the grass track west/southwest .6 miles to a height-of-land, then bushwacked northerly 200+ yds to a large flat contour, nothing obvious, I stomped the area to my satisfaction.

1 AREA (#6(6)) ONAWAY QUAD ... a successful bushwack southbound, .4 miles RT.
Dale answered the door at #19947 3 Mile Road, "Yes you may, there was another guy here not long ago for the same thing. You can actually drive back there, here let me put my shoes on and I'll show you the way."
He pointed to a grass track amid his beautiful red pine woods, which he planted 15 years ago. He told us that the HP is on private property, the owner from Detroit never comes here.
From the parking spot at rear of the property (400 yards from the road), I descended to a low area before climbing the ridge south to the HP area at about 300 yards .... a large flat area with nothing obvious. Most of the ridge is full of thorny brush, not easy. The woods in the area are open and easy.

VISIT #2 DATED 2017-09-17 .... a successful easy visit to the last 2 areas, there-by completing the county.
For this 2nd visit we used a completely different driving approach for both areas. We found our way to the main Hwy JCT #32/33 in the village of Atlanta. The driving directions to the TH for both areas start at this JCT.

AREA #3(1) ... road walk with short wack ... 1.2 miles, 100' gain, 33 minute RT.
00.0M ... we zeroed our odo at JCT #32/33 in Atlanta and traveled north on #33.
15.5M ... turned right (eastbound) on Tomahawk Lake Road (this road is 1.3 miles north of the County Line or 10 miles south of Onaway). Always stayed straight on the good dirt road.
19.5M ... fork, right is Elk Road. We stayed/continued left on Tomahawk Lake Road as it bends to the northeast.
19.7M ... turned right (east) on Crawford Lane, white MB#12605 on corner.
19.9M ... 4-way JCT, we parked, this was out TH. Straight ahead is a gated Road (the continuation of Crawford Lane) signed "CORN HILL" but not posted. The woods either side of it however are posted. The HP is to the northeast.
I walked the sandy Crawford Lane southeast 150 yds to a left turn on another sandy road signed "Highway to Heaven", 250 yds northeast the road bends left (northerly) I went right (east) here (45.23473,-84.41210) on a grass road for 80 yds to a fork, where is stayed left as the road continues northeast 450 yds to its crest. The flat 950' contour (AREA #3) is to the right in nice open woods (45.23751,-84.11576).
We returned to Atlanta.

AREA #5(3) ... easy wack nb, .5 miles, 50' gain, 18 minutes RT.
00.0M ... zeroed our odo at JCT #32/33 in Atlanta and traveled east on #32.
11.6M ... pass Farrier Road on right, which leads to the Turtle Lake Lookout.
15.0M ... #32 makes a long right bend, turned left on State Street (CR451) as it heads north through the village of Hillman.
24.5M ... turned left (west) on the paved Hubert Road (about 1 mile south of the Presque Isle county line).
26.0M ... pavement ends, good dirt continues.
31.6M ... pass Healy Hardwood Road on the right, continue straight.
32.6M ... dead-end at a turnaround with 3 gated entrances to private houses. Didn't feel like knocking on doors, so we turned around for 400 yds and parked on the side of the road. This was our TH, the HP is to the north at 350 yds.
I bushwacked north, crossed a L-R grass road at 150 yds followed by a small rough logged area, stomped the 950' contour and called it good. Nice open woods.
