Ascent of Crystal Mountain-Grubstake Peak on 2017-09-03
|Date:||Sunday, September 3, 2017|
|Ascent Type:||Successful Summit Attained|
|Peak:||Crystal Mountain-Grubstake Peak|
| Elevation:||6840 ft / 2084 m|
Ascent Trip ReportWe took the gondola to Summit House and hiked out along the ridge to get a better view to the north. The Norse Peak Wildfire raged to our east probably not one mile away. The Jolly Mountain fire was in full view to the northeast. Our views of MT Rainier were good too.
The next day the winds had shifted and the Norse Peak Fire crept to the ridge and the valley filled with smoke as well as the east side of Rainier was smoke filled. Crystal did not open for Labor Day due to the smoke and later that day there was a Level 3 evacuation ordered for the valley due to the raging wildfire.
As it turned out, the ski area wouldn't open for the rest of the fall season which was scheduled to stay open until Sept 18 for tourism up the Gondola.
We're greatful we got up there but fear what the foliage will look like the next time we get up there.
