Ascent Trip ReportAfter racing Riedlbauer's Round Top Rally mountain bike race, I decided to do a little hiking since I was in the Catskills and had some time. I also wanted to utilize my son's recently published book "50 Hikes in the Catskills" (Shameless plug: Check it out on Amazon! It's a very good guide book!)
Started at the Barnum Road parking area, hiking along a rocky jeep road to the DEC sign in after about 1/2 a mile. The trail ascends gradually through open forest for almost another half mile before turning right and ascending more aggressively. Some of this climb has rock outcroppings and there is a viewpoint on one if it the leaves are down. About 1/3 mile past this viewpoint is the summit of Caudal, which is a nondescript area with trees and brush.
I saw 3 grouse on Caudal as they flew away through the trees.
