Ascent Trip Report

I saw this small peak from the summit of chief. I made the mistake of trying to bushwhack it from up too far. I eventually got frustrated that I could not see in the thick pines and correctly hiked down slope till I re-intersected the main trail for the Chief. If you leave from the correct saddle that shows easily on the USGS map and the trail goes right through it - it is a very easy bushwhack with easy view of the summit from the saddle as the pines are thinner from the true saddle. You can not miss this saddle. It is the only place on the Chief hike that opens up into a wide flat spot with few trees. There are some bristlecone pines found on both peaks. Although a tiny subpeak, I did enjoy the fact that I was finally alone as Chief is a zoo of people. Papoose has 3 small subpeaks all of solid rock this nice for scrambling. You can pick a class 2 or 3 route up any of the small nubs. I selected a challenging 3+ scrambling style route that I found - very short but more rewarding than a hike up at the end.
