Ascent Trip ReportJust inside Newark from South Orange is the intersection of Irvington Avenue and Manor Drive. Park as close as you can to a walkway between the southern two apartment buildings along Manor Drive. I parked in the Walgreens lot, which should not be a problem, as you will be there no more than fifteen minutes. High ground in the large 260'+ contour is at the eastern blob near the tennis courts, but I felt that highest ground was behind the apartment buildings in the large open area visible on the aerial photo. From the sidewalk (N40.73617 W74.24740), follow the walkway west and uphill toward a chain link fence with a wooded area beyond. See a spot where a downed tree has collapsed the fence enough to allow a scramble over it. Beware of poison ivy as you cross the fence. I wandered in the weeds and trees beyond and measured high ground at or near 40.73645 X -74.24866. This large open area seems to be a no-man's land and is posted with some dire warnings about lack of security, especially where it backs up to the shopping center on Irvington Avenue. The woods show sign of man, and may even be the site of some squatting. Keep your wits about you while in there, and avoid very early or late hours.
