Ascent Trip ReportThe holiest mountain in Ireland, also known as Cruach Phádraig or The Reek.
Climbed on Good Friday in near perfect conditions. Parked by the visitor centre and took the usual pilgrim’s path from the statue of St Patrick to the summit with its chapel. A partly maintained trail with religious and other paraphernalia en route. Extremely rocky underfoot which of course makes the bare-footed pilgrims’ task more mortifying. Fantastic views over Clew Bay with its many islands and more generally over the surrounding south Mayo countryside and beyond. My eldest son (5 years old) made it to the top by his own efforts but needed an occasional carry on the way down. The rest of the family (including my heavily pregnant wife) rested part way up.
Unfortunately Campbell’s Pub was closed so I couldn’t celebrate with Guinness and oysters afterwards. |
