Ascent Trip Reporti suspect this is the wrong season to do this hike: too hot, too many grasshoppers, and no flowers. although given the number of cows i'm not sure flowers would last long. the cows were good for one thing though: they make nice trails through the bushes, generally following contour lines too.
on the way out i mostly followed the road, which goes up and over every bump. the most annoying is point 9098: the road on the south side is OK, but on the north it's just a steep slippery mess. on the way back i wanted to avoid this: it turns out there's a great use trail that leads around the west side of 9098. the north side of this use trail is very obvious, it's great single track (and goes past two trees which offer some shade, which was the only shade of the hike). however the south side of the trail is a bit less clear... if you look closely you'll see i backtracked a bit: the junction of that backtrack is a cow trail intersection. i wasn't sure which way i wanted to go, and in the end went about side-hilling until i rejoined the road at a saddle. if you want to find the use trail just aim for the junction where i backtracked, you should be able to find cow trails which get you there.
i couldn't figure out an obvious way to avoid oxford ridge on the way back... i'm sure there is one, but by that point i didn't want to risk adding too many miles.
i carried 4L and finished 3L at mile 11.2.
oh the drive in was definitely 4x4 high clearance, and it was uncomfortable in a vehicle as wide as my range rover (but not impossible).
p.s. i'm pretty sure the high point should be on the southern summit (south of the benchmark location). caltopo's DEM shows points as high as 9308' on the southern summit. andrew kirmse's data shows the high point at:
Key saddle latitude: 42.3473
Key saddle longitude: -112.5845
