Ascent Trip ReportFine, popular rocky peak with good trail from SW, some scrambling, little exposure, some rockfall hazard. 6h15mins day hike. High clearance advised, might get most of way with 2WD.
From Fort Steele via Mause Creek Rd as per Summitpost directions. Last few miles quite rough, fine in our RAV4, probably challenging in 2WD although some people seem to manage it, stopping a little short if necessary.
Space for 3 or 4 cars at start of trail, which is signposted, with an info board a few metres above. Clear trail steeply uphill, then gradient eases with cairns marking route across easy stonefield, fairly level valley then stable scree leads to loosish gully which climbs half left to col; we find better footing off to right, YDS2+. A few squally spells of rain, hail briefly below col, quite windy. Route turns L at col, pretty well cairned, soon steepening with a little scrambling, 3m of YDS3 just below the summit, surprisingly protected by a belay ring although quite easy with little exposure.
Summit marker post has a Canadian flag with ammo box register, evidently a popular peak with many entries all from this year. We overtake a guided party of four in the gully and they arrive after half an hour. Fine view, now sunny although more distant peaks are in cloud; The Steeples immediately to S look impressive, and apparently just 2m lower.
We summit in 3h15, spend 45mins on top and descend in 2h15; at foot of gully two girls are heading up. Quite hot and sunny lower down. About 45mins drive back to tarmac then into Cranbrook for food; WiFi to check wildfire situation. Harrison is accessible from south so we refuel and prepare for 100km of dirt road! Assiniboine peak is now accessible although most of the park is closed. So plenty to go at.
