Ascent Trip ReportAn easy drive up travel day P1000 en route from Kootenay to Harrison. AWD advised but might be doable in 2WD.
From Cranbrook we take Highway 3 southeast then R on Ha Ha Creek Rd, then in 500m R onto a wide smooth gravel road. In approx 13 km another good gravel road turns acutely R; we follow this to the summit, passing an open gate after 5km. The road is quite steep in places but may just be doable in 2WD; easy in my RAV4 AWD.
The summit is marked by a large boulder, with a large parking area, several comms towers and the remains of a picnic bench. There should be an excellent view of Mt Fisher, today barely visible due to the smoky haze. One other tourist vehicle up there.
We head north to Canal Flats for a meal then head west for the Mt Harrison trailhead. However, the road is closed beyond White River campground, due to a fire. This closure was put in place only two days ago, and disappointingly there was no warning sign at the main highway. This has cost us 40 miles of gravel road and we don't now have time to reach the trailhead via the much longer southern route in time to climb the peak tomorrow. We head instead for Mt Fisher.
