Ascent Trip ReportThis was a rather quick hike, as it should rightly have been since it was 105F from start to finish. I parked at Dreamy Draw after an hour long tire patching in a parking lot at Katrina's clinic of the week. I took the 100 trail under AZ51 and then took a right when the sign said the trail goes to the left on the other side. This unnamed trail cuts off considerable distance and is just as well used as some of the number trails around these hills. Once around the unnamed hill, I rejoined Trail 100 for a short while. Once I got to a point where there was a subpeak that was not on the ridgeline of Stoney to my left and a little bit ahead, I took a smaller use trail up to the west and then to the col of the subpeak. The trail then goes up steeply towards the ridgeline. I made a couple class 2 moves that probably could have been avoided if I cared to go around. Touching rocks was not a great activity, though, because most here are stark black and were super-heated in the sun. Once on the ridge there were about three false summits before I made it to the very obvious highest one. I did a little scrambling, but once again you could avoid it if you looked around and maybe backtracked slightly. The Stoney Mountain Ridgeline is quite impressive as far as its cragginess. I went back the way I came. |
