Ascent Trip ReportAfter tackling Challenger Point we headed over to do this high prominence peak next. The Alley is an interesting feature. It looks precarious from a distance and yes it does have some exposure but when the snow is melted out on the alley it is safe and fun. It is not class 3 anywhere along the alley.
The photos and views from the alley are outstanding. The alley heads up at a steep angle of say 30 degrees then swing around the backside of the peak to avoid class 5 rock and then heads down at 30 degrees on another alley that is also exposed but safe.
The route reports suggest going to the bottom of the alley and exiting at the rock fin and hike up the class 2 and class 2+ rock. We were done with lose scree. We saw another route before the standard route turn off at the fin. It is about 0.1 to 0.2 mile before the fin and is an easy class 3 with good rock all the way up. There are a few places where rock did dislodge so a climbing helmet is advisable. In fact, I would hike both peaks with head protections because the class 2+ rock on both moves and could hurt someone below.
This slightly alternate route up is much better than the class 2/2+ route and we climbed both up and back. The peak has fantastic views and has some very sharp knife edge ribs at the top. This has been one of my favorite 14ers.
