Ascent Trip Report

Climbed Bonneville South from Jewett Lake, Wallowa Mountains. We left Jewett Lake and headed West to the gap in the ridge west of the lake. This is about 300 feet to the top which then looks into a small valley with a couple of very shallow lakes and a lot of mushy grass. Down 300 feet of loose talus and across the valley floor to another 300 foot talus slope. Both places will be very obviously the easiest routes to gain the ridge crests.
From there, we moved along the crest of the ridge until we hit the large grey rock banks. We chose the east side for the first half of this section (about 150 meters in horizontal distance). The slope is not bad at the beginning, but as you move north it gradually becomes steeper and the exposure becomes more obvious. Stay the course until you are over half way. We went a bit farther (and retreated a bit) and when things begin to look exposed you should aim for the ridge. There are convenient gaps in the ridge that you can move through easily. Once you are on the west side, (providing you went far enough on the east side to miss the very long rib of grey rock that extends 75 feet down the west side) the going is easy through trees, boulders and scree slopes with only one small grey rock band to get through. This rock band has a very obvious gap in it and it not hard to pass through. Then onto more scree and trees. Occasionally you will come to gaps where you can see over to the east side and be glad you are on the west!. The ridge begins to round out as you pass from rock to hard packed gravel and then it is a very easy walk to the summit, although it is a fair distance away still. Once up top, you have to decide if the dark brown knob is higher than the white rounded main summit. The summit register is on the knob, but the white summit looks higher to me. Either way, they are both really easy to get to.
