Ascent Trip Report

Originally planned to hike Tripyramids but since the weather looked good we headed north with Monroe as our target, thinking we might get Eisenhower if the weather was good. Parked at the Ammonoosuc trailhead and hiked up the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail to the Lakes of the Clouds hut (3 m). Hike up was relatively steep and wet but it went quickly. Wind and fog picked up as we got close to the hut. Stopped at the hut to sign the logbook and grab food before we took the short (0.4m each way) trip up Crawford Path to Monroe. Wind was 40-50mph on Monroe and the fog never let up so we missed the views, but occasionally it would clear and the Croo at the hut said they expected clearing by then. When got back to the hut we made the decision to go for Washington in hopes it would clear while we hiked. The 1.4m hike up to Washington via Crawford Path wasn't hard and we got a few breaks but never really saw the peaks. It was really socked in on Washington and the rain was hard just as we got to the peak (and waited in line!).

Grabbed more food and started back down Crawford Path. As we left the summit the clouds broke giving us nice views of the Great Gulf, Clay, Jefferson, Adams and Madison. Picked up the Cog Rail after 1.3m and decided to make the beeline back to the car (2.8m) rather than go down the Jewel Trail. Round trip was 9.4 miles and about 4300' of elevation gain total.
