Ascent Trip Report

After the morning ascent of Morton Peak I head over to tackle the long drive in. Roads all shown on OpenStreetMap. I manage to identify the start of the route mentioned on the Sushwap Trails webpage. The 35km marker is a few metres along Grizzly Rd. Soon after the first bridge (just before km 1), a track goes left, very overgrown but matching the described location exactly. OSM has the course of the road marked for a few zigzags. It seems unlikely that it has been driven in recent years. It may or may not be a feasible hiking route now, but factoring in the extra 2.5km to the start of the ATV track, it would now be a 32km route, compared with the 12km RT described by Mclellan, Myers et al. I continue to Grizzly Lodge, the road pretty good except for the last mile which needs high clearance and is brushy; with care the RAV4 makes it with paintwork intact. I sleep here in the vehicle.

0540 start - slept early and still a little jet lagged. Followed track to boulder hop creek, continues another 300m then turn L along edge of newer growth, pretty easy going and a bit too cool yet for mosquitos. Older growth above a bit tougher with brushy understorey and a few fallen trees, but not as bad as Mrs M makes out - she should spend more time in Welsh spruce plantations and toughen up :-D

SW ridge becomes more pronounced and less brushy, lovely alpine flowers, cliff to L side and a couple of scrambly tops to cross, view back to the red painted Grizzly Lodge far below, then broad ridge leads between some snow slopes and over a lower summit to the highpoint - large cairn (N51.20475° W119.23521°) with outcrop a few m to SW a little lower.

Hazy views. Up in 2h40, a few mins on top before the mosquitoes arrive, then down in 2h40, a little slow as I lose the best line a couple of times and waste time side hilling. Very welcome wash in creek then steady drive down, 48km back to paved road according to my SatNav! Then to Sun Peaks for Mt Tod - which I do this pm, unusual opportunity to bag 2 Canadian ultras in a day!
