Ascent Trip Reporti was heading north. gmaps seems to have this area well mapped, and it matched fred's directions on the way up. as connor found last year the road is in great condition. the only issue i had was some manzanita bush encroachment on the road. after the hike i was headed to the north, and gmaps found an even better road -- no bushes to worry about. i did record a track of the drive up and down.
i hiked up the east ridge, it was pretty pleasant. nice forest with pleasant understory: just some crunchy dead branches, and occasional low laying bush you can stomp over easily. on the way up i hiked every rock on the way to the summit... all but the second last was a waste of time. as connor noted, the high point may actually be to the west of the peakbagger point by 100' or so.
on the way down i wanted to avoid going up/down on the ridge again, so i dropped a bit on the north side of the ridge. i ended up dropping a bit too far, and had a steep side-hill to deal with until i gave in and re-ascended the ridge. then it was pleasant downhill again.
haze from various forest fires didn't help the views much... i could see goosenest to the south, but could barely make out the snow on shasta beyond it.
