Ascent Trip ReportWe stayed at a hotel in Triesen, just south of of the capital Vaduz, in Liechtenstein. It is a 25 minute drive to Malans, in Switzerland, and the valley station of the Älpli Bahn aerial tramway.
The tramway is a summer service and currently a cash-only service. They accept Swiss Franc or Euro. Call in advance to make a reservation as the tramway is small with a few seats.
The hike starts out from the tramway top station, following a good trail up over the Kamm pass. From the pass, the trail drops to Fläscher Alp farm and a bit further down to the Ijes sideroad to the left. The trail passes a dark tunnel before reaching the Ijes farm. The marked trail ends in Ijes and from here it is use trails. We hiked westward in the pasture, up in the middle of the bowl to the ridge at 2350 m, it was really slow hiking, due to the grassy and rocky surface. From the ridge we went down to the flatter area in the Schafälpli hanging valley. A few drops of rain and we put the rain gear on, and quickly off again. It is a lot easier to hike across the flatter bottom part of the valley instead of trying to keep the elevation and circle around. From the bottom, we hiked up the skree to the summit saddle and then turned left to the for summit. Dropped the packs and traversed to the real summit. Signed the summit book we found in the tip cairn; first sign was from 1993.
Coming down the same way through Schafälpli and back up to the ridge. From the ridge we saw a use trail on the left ridge coming back towards Ijes. We descended along the use trail to a small lake at 2150 m and further down to Ijes among a lot or curious cows. Back to the tramway the same way as we hiked in the morning. Celebrated with a beer at the Älpli Bahn top station.
We should have hiked the use trail on the right hand ridge of the bowl on the way up to the first saddle to have had a better and simpler ascent and also saved us some time. This information would be the takeaway and experience to share from our trip report.
A nice and sunny day except from the few rain drops in the Schafälpli hanging valley. The day before was really hot and windy from the South.
