Ascent Trip Report

My son and son-in-law and myself arrived at the park a little before 5:30am and there were already 4 vehicles ahead of us waiting at the gate. The ranger showed up at 6:00am and opened the gate. We made it to the Roaring Brook parking lot at about 6:30 am. The dirt road back to the parking lot was like a washboard. The road definitely needs work. We hiked up on the Helon Taylor trail, crossed the knife edge to the peak, and returned on the saddle trail and chimney pond trail. The round trip took us 10 hrs. including breaks, 5 hrs. up and 5 hrs. down. The trail down was longer than going up. The weather was great, but we needed some sun protection since we were above treeline so long. I loved hiking the chimney and knife edge, very cool, one of my favorite hikes. I never felt in danger at any point, but I could see how it could be if the weather was bad. Great hike, well worth the drive up from PA.
