Ascent Trip Report

Spent night at cabin being built in Fairplay on a thermarest to acclimate at 10,200. Then got up at 4:30 AM drove to the trailhead about 1 hour away and found parking getting difficult already! Packed up and left at about 5:45AM.

The trails are incredibly easy to follow. This is one of the easier 14ers in terms of ease finding the TH (parking lot off of paved country road) and easy straight up class 1, well maintained trail. It is a long approach through the montaine and the total gain for the trip is a worthy 4,400 to 4,500 feet.

There is no scree! Once you hit the saddle there is a lot of boulders to contend with the trail club has routed you around the class 3 pinnacles and false peaks so you can stay on mostly class 2 the entire way. Truthfully, some of the class 2 is really 2+ everybody has hands down as the size of the boulders necessitate some upper body leverage and pulls here and there. Some people left the cairns and found some class 3 for fun but it is not necessary. The ridge approach and summit reminded me of Mount Harvard.

The views of the collegiate peaks is awesome on a clear day. One of the better high view maps to see!
I climbed at a very satisfying rate gaining the peak in exactly 3 hours and down in 2 hours. I was only passed by 4 people all day.

Final note for future camping........plenty of sites along the way. I can not recall a 14er route with some many nice camping sites near water. Seems every time we crossed the stream there were plenty of sites. Do not need to rush site selection there were decent spots even at last major creek crossing.
