Ascent Trip ReportWoke up in SLC around 4:00 and headed out by 4:45. Drove across the beautiful deserts of the Great Basin bathed in early morning light. Cruised through Paradise Valley and up to Hinkey Summit, arriving around 10:00. I parked at Hinkey Summit because I didn't feel like driving up the road towards Granite Peak. The road, it turns out, is it pretty good shape right now. Most vehicles with high clearance could continue to the basin beyond the fence line further up the road. I hiked the road to the cattle guard and then followed a faint use trail that follows the fenceline. I then shot up Granite Peak and caught endless views of smoky haze. That was pretty disappointing. Afterwards I explored the area a bit more. On the other side of the Hinkey Summit road there is a natural bridge in the rock formations that is quite impressive. I climbed up there afterwards and enjoyed the vistas that the ridge provided. The range is very interesting, full of craggy rock formations. Well worth a visit.
Paradise Valley is also a pretty neat little town. The Chevron on the junction of the highway and the Paradise Valley road is in business now. It looks brand new, and hopefully it will last a while, since there doesn't seem to be any other gas station open between Winnemucca and Lakeview. Denio Junction looked open when I passed it, but I have heard it opens and closes quite frequently and isn't a reliable source for fuel.
